Orange Shirt Day/Terry Fox Run

Hi Parents,

Just a reminder that it is the Terry Fox run tomorrow, so if you want, you can bring a Toonie donation to school. Also, there is not enough time after the run to have a full lunch, so a big snack might be more in order to keep your child going until they get home. We are also going to be wearing orange.

The school office has asked that we send you the Newsletter for next month. Really, it's the end of September already? !

In writing/social studies this week, we have been looking at what gives us our sense of identity. We have considered lots of different pieces to this puzzle, from what languages we speak to what our passions and interests are. It has been a lot of fun to learn some more about each other and discover more and more connections. This will help launch our exploration of what it is to be a global citizen. It would be great if you could have a discussion with your child this week about your family, its culture and history. These family stories are treasures that need to be shared! We will be looking at why students are being encouraged to wear an orange shirt on Friday and how respect of everyone's identity is important.

In math, we are really making progress at looking carefully at word problems by highlighting key information, showing our thinking and by remembering to add units to our answer!
We are getting better at our make ten numbers, adding ten and adding nine to numbers. We have used strategies such as looking at a hundreds chart. If your child find it challenging to say what other number is needed to make ten (so if I say 4, you would say 6), adding on ten or adding on 9, then these would be useful things to practice at home.

In science we have come up with a big list of questions that we want to investigate, such as 'What are rocks made of?' and 'Why do some rocks float?' We look forward to finding out more. Sometimes we will be using the computers to find out answers and we have been talking about Digital Citizenship at school. It would be an excellent opportunity for you to review rules and etiquette  around technology use.

Don't Forget:

The Terry Fox run is on Friday. Wear suitable clothes and consider wearing an orange shirt/item of clothing for Orange Shirt Day. You might also like to bring in a toonie for Terry.

Our school office has asked that we pass on the following information to you:

Hello Parents and Guardians

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our class will use digital media to enhance, differentiate, and personalize student learning and the use of headphones is encouraged for the upcoming SLAs.

Please enclose your child’s headphones or ear buds into a labeled Zip-Loc bag and send to school as soon as possible.  We will keep the headphones or ear buds in the classroom until the end of the school year, and send them back home in June.

Thank you for your support!

Grade 3 Teachers

Saturday, September 23, 2017

It was great seeing many of you yesterday or Thursday at Parent Teacher Conferences and hearing stories from you about how well your children have settled in to a new class, are making new friends and are adjusting to the increased demands of grade 3. It's important to me that your child feels this way. Please do not hesitate to contact me to help me if that ever changes.

We like to encourage children to be independent and solve their own problems and forge their own friendships independently, but sometimes they just need a little help!

I had a chance to speak to most of you about making sure you still receive messages from the school office but in case I missed you, here is the message that I was asked to pass on:

Hello Parents/Guardians,

The office has sent out an email yesterday at 10:00 am with the subject heading “Weekly Dispatch Sept 25-29”.   If you have not received this email it indicates you have not subscribed to receive non-commercial emails from Ken Taylor School and the CBE.  Please follow the attached link in order to subscribe and stay informed.

Thank you,

Please do make sure you check that you received the message so you don't miss any important information!

When you return to school on Tuesday, please can you make sure the two forms given out at the start of the year in the white envelope have been returned. We like to have the white envelope returned also so we can use it again and be kind to our environment!

Parent Teacher Conferences

There are still a few families who have not yet signed up for parent teacher conferences. If you are having difficulty booking your appointment, please contact either me (shnjie@cbe.ab.ca) or the school office and we will be happy to assist you.

Looking forward to meeting you all and starting our year long dialogues about your child to support them in setting and achieving their goals!

The Magnificent Box!

Our Magnificent Boxes are almost ready! Part of the box building process was to think about Design Thinking Mindsets. We concentrated on thinking about the mindset of ‘optimism’.

We had lots of discussions about what optimism looks and feels like. We came up with alternate phrases, such as ‘thinking positively.’ Maybe you can think of some more at home. We certainly had to practice being optimistic when parts of our boxes did not work as planned!

In our journals we learned how to draw 3D rectangular prisms to show what our original box looked like.

We then drew side and top views of our creations.

In writing we have been trying to add lots of detail and description. We tried to describe both the outside and the inside of the box so that you could picture it even if you could not see the box. Having the prompts, ‘tell me more’ and ‘can you add more detail?’ has helped us.

We hope you really enjoy the boxes!

In reading we have been building up our reading stamina and can now read for longer without losing concentration. We have also been practicing partner reading.

In math we have been revising concepts such as number, digits, greater than, less than. We have been playing games with our shaker dice to help us gain automaticity with finding the make ten number. For example, if the die shows 2 then the make ten number is 8.

What an exiting one and a bit weeks it has been! We have spent a lot of time thinking about connections. We started by thinking about connections we already have by reading the book The Invisible String. We then created a journal page about out home connections.

Next, we thought about the connections we had within our class. Some people felt they did not have any connections because they were new to the school (me included!) and some felt they had connections to one or two people in the class, maybe because they played a sport together or were in the same class last year. Nobody felt really connected to lots of people in the class.

We then played a game where example all the people who had a pet met together for a few moments. Can you believe everyone in the class has a sibling?! Through this game, we connected with people who have different things in common with us, like preferring either a quiet or busy environment, or speaking another language. We all agreed we felt much more connected after this game. This made us all feel a lot better.

We thought about how this made us feel safer and more comfortable and wrote about this using the Thinking Routine, ‘I used to think …. But now I think’.  For example, many students reflected that they used to think they had very few connections in the class but now they think they have things in common with a variety of people. Thinking routines are scaffolds, used to support students to grow in their critical thinking skills. In grade three we will use a lot of Thinking Routines!

Our work this week is to finish our 3D effect hand art and create a hall display showing the school how all of the students in the class are connected to each other. By re-visiting this idea, we will also be firmly grounding that belief within our students.

This week we also started our box project. We kick started this by reading The Most Magnificent Thing, where the main character of the book learned important things such as how failing is an important part of learning and how to keep optimistic through adversity. Growth Mindsets are important life skills and we will be learning and living them through the year.  Another story to help students understand the importance of perseverance and keeping positive is Mrs. Armitage.

We will keep you posted about how our project is going, the problems we encountered on the way and what we learned by experiencing challenges!

As a class, together we created a ‘Found Poem’ about feelings we have when we begin new adventures, such as starting a new grade. This type of poetry is really good at allowing children to show their understanding,  without having to worry too much about creating full sentences. As the students get more practice with Found Poetry, we will return to Found Poetry in the blog and show you how it works. At this stage, your child should know and be able to explain too!

We have also worked very hard at understanding what a really good book choice is and how to go about independently selecting books that are a ‘Good Fit’ for our current reading level. You can support this at home by having your child talk you through the I PICK selection process and having them pick out some books to read at home.  Even if your child is a good reader, it is important to set aside 15-20 minutes reading time at home every day. This should be done with an adult. As well as help to read challenging words, adults can ask questions about the text, such as ‘What did you just read?’ or ‘How do you think Sally felt when that happened? What makes you say that?’

Happy Reading!
