First, a huge thank you to parents who have been using IXL at home. If you have not already been using it, then have a try this weekend. The majority of the parents whose children stayed at home during the severe weather on Thursday logged on and practiced their skills. What a great use of your time! Some students have been sent home with some math they have been doing. Ask your child if they have some math in their backpack. Three digit addition, with regrouping, is a skill we have been working on for a long time and your child has received significant extra one to one support at school. They are getting there but would really benefit from short but daily support with you at home to gain the necessary practice to fully master this skill. IXL does provide practice in this but nothing beats having your child work through an addition as you watch on. You can catch them the moment they make a mistake and guide them through their particular area of challenge.

In writing we are combining our knowledge about paragraph writing, transition words and varying sentence beginnings to create our own 'How To ...' writing. Today the students decided they all wanted to write about a 'reverse snow day'! Ask me what that is. Listen  to my ideas and help me organize my thoughts orally. This practice will help me write down my ideas.

Another way you could help your child is to have them write a 'How to...' paragraph about anything they want. Again, having you sit with them and catch them the moment they forget to begin a sentence with an upper case, throw in an upper case in the middle of a sentence or use lower case 'i' for the word 'I,' is invaluable at helping to break these habits. You can also notice and point out if common words, such as 'with' or 'went' are being spelled correctly.
