Snow Already?!

This week's weather came as a bit of a shock to us all! It was a good reminder that we need to make sure we know where our gloves, hats and warm coats are as we spend quite a bit of time each day outside and that wind can be chilly!

We started the week by finishing our work about Terry Fox and Orange Shirt day.

This built nicely onto our social studies work about identity, where we wrote about the things about us that makes us unique, such as wanting our hair to look a particular way. We didn't like that the little girl had part of her identity taken away from her, such as her orange shirt or her long hair. The way our unique identity is formed is like a puzzle so this is how we displayed our work. The visual was also a good model to help explain the difference between rocks and minerals as the individual pieces are like the minerals and the whole puzzle like a chunk of rock!

We have started our SLAs so thank you to everyone who was able to send in earphones. We continue with the SLAs tomorrow so if you have a pair at home please send them in as it is much nicer to wear your own gear!

This week the Grade 3s have started their home reading program.  You will notice that your child came home with a Ziploc bag with a leveled book, home reading log and some parent information.  Please have your child read each evening for about 20 minutes.  They can read independently or aloud to a parent or sibling.   Feel free to explore other genres and reading material other than the leveled books if you have those available at your house… Just READ!!

It is important that your child bring the book and bag back to school each day to help build habit.  They will have the choice to read these during independent reading times at school.  Please encourage your children to read a book or a passage of a book 3-4 times to help increase their accuracy, fluency, and understanding.  This may mean that they have the same book for several days.

There is a spot on the reading log for parent comments.  Please take the time to comment on the fit of the book or to write a wish or to compliment  your child’s reading.
